Light Fixture Final Keyshot Render

Project Overview

Light Fixture  is a digital fabrication project in which I was tasked with designing a functional 3D light fixture digitally modelled within Rhino, animated within Keyshot, and physically fabricated using a TITAN vinyl cutter, a Zing laser cutter, and a Bambu 3D printer.

The final product is a self-standing structure containing a 3D printed PLA body wrapped in bent wood, laser-cut acrylic sheets arranged in a petal-like pattern, and vinyl-cut stickers depicting abstract illustrations graphically aligned with the minimalist theme.

PLA stands for "Polylactic Acid" and refers to a biodegradable plastic filament often used to create 3D prints due to its ease of use, affordability, and high-quality smooth finish.

I chose to incorporate this material into my finished product mainly to serve as a structurally-sound base upon which I could adhere various materials.

PLA

Wood

The particular wood used within this piece is a 0.8" tall Baltic birch plywood. This wood is known for laser cutting especially cleanly.

I chose to incorporate this material into my piece due to its tendency to warp when worked with. This aided in my ability to bend and wrap it around my 3D-printed PLA base.

Acrylic

In the case of this project, acrylic refers to glossy plexiglass sheets made of lightweight, shatter-resistant plastic called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). This is often used as a glass alternative.

I chose to incorporate this material into my piece because of their high durability, vibrant color options, and self-standing abilities when braced.

Vinyl

In the case of this project, vinyl refers to a synthetic plastic sticker made from ethylene and chlorine. It is frequently used across design and communications to engage environmental spaces.

I chose to incorporate this material into my piece because of its high heat-resistance, easy application, and precision-cutting even when small.

Final Thoughts

My project derives inspiration from the organic shape language of lily pads and minimal, eco-friendly design aesthetics to create a unique product that challenges the limits of materiality in modern manufacturing.
